The Bells of St Mary’s. 1945. USA. Directed by Leo McCarey. Screenplay by McCarey, Dudley Nichols. With Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman, Henry Travers. 126 min.
This follow-up to Going My Way has Crosby return as Father O’Malley, teaming up with Bergman’s Sister Benedict to save an inner-city school that serves disadvantaged kids. As Crosby and Bergman navigate their romantically charged but celibate relationship, much of the comedy comes from tensions between the characters’ higher calling and their essentially flawed humanity, the fulcrum of McCarey’s worldview.
