The comic incompatibility of husband and wife Lowe and Hyams prefigures Cary Grant and Irene Dunne’s in The Awful Truth, with specific scenes even reworked in the latter classic. McCarey felt that this was the first recognizable “Leo McCarey picture,” and it was a huge hit that he said enabled him to double his asking price.
