East Is West. 1930. USA. Directed by Monta Bell. 75 min.
Unheralded auteur Monta Bell (Downstairs) wrote and directed this stylish sound remake of a dubious 1922 Constance Talmadge yellow-peril melodrama, now with Mexican star Lupe Velez cast as an Asian woman trapped in San Francisco’s Chinatown, where she suffers the unwelcome attentions of triad boss Edward G. Robinson (still a year away from his breakthrough in Little Caesar).
