Afraid to Talk. 1932. USA. Directed by Edward L. Cahn. 69 min.

As the sole witness to a gangland execution, bellboy Eric Linden dutifully reports what he knows to district attorney Louis Calhern—who, being on the underworld’s payroll himself, seizes the opportunity to frame the young idealist for the crime. Perhaps the most violent and pessimistic of all the early-1930s gangster films, it's directed with great visual flair by the underappreciated Edward L. Cahn.
