Pohland’s innovative adaptation of Grass's novel came under political fire in West Germany for its alleged desecration of a German war medal (and giving acting jobs to two sons of Willy Brandt). Returning to the Danzig of his youth, a former gymnast reflects on the fate of a classmate who disappeared during the war.

This film accompanies Germany 66.
