For his first solo flight as a director, Lewis chose a deliberately anecdotal story centered on a klutzy bellboy at Miami’s Fontainebleau Hotel, which becomes the framework for a series of silent-movie sight gags and audaciously self-referential moments (as when the movie star Jerry Lewis, played by one “Joe Levitch,” arrives for a gig—Lewis was actually performing at the Fontainebleau during the film’s tight four-week shoot).

This film accompanies Happy Birthday, Mr. Lewis: The Kid Turns 90 .
