JOANN VERBURG: These pictures were taken half way between night and day. It was probably August and sunset. When the light was just so, right between day and night, I'd start shooting. And then I'd have to move very, very quickly because the light's changing so fast that if I didn't move quickly I would lose the light and I wouldn't be able to finish the piece or match the colors.
One of the things that is a little bit different about Exploding Triptych than some of the other olive tree photographs that I've made is it's not strictly panoramic. This one has a bigger space between the image in the middle and the right than the one in the middle and the left.
Maybe it's a little bit like music when sometimes you hear a piece of music repeat within a song or a symphony and sometimes you don't. So musically you can say that this piece is "da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-a-la-la-la -- da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-a-la-la-la -- da-da!" (laughs)
