JOANN VERBURG: I got a Guggenheim grant, which allowed me to do a trip across country. And one of the things that my husband and I did was we drove from Florida across Louisiana and into Texas, and I remember seeing a huge lit up sign that said, Hotel, and there was something about the sign that I just got such a kick out of it, we decided we would stay there.
We were in a bit of a stupor from driving all day, and Jim walked around in front of the television and I loved the way he was lit with that blue light from the TV set?
You're actually looking at him through a mirror, so what you're seeing in the foreground down at the bottom is a picnic basket that's being reflected in the mirror, and then he is also being reflected in the mirror.
A lot of my photographs are made when I'm traveling, and I think there's certain things about traveling that are really helpful to me, and one of them is that things are a little out of whack. I find that very provocative.
