SUSAN KISMARIC: Hello, I’m Susan Kismaric, curator in the Department of Photography at MoMA. I’m pleased to welcome you to Present Tense, an exhibition featuring over 60 works by photographer JoAnn Verburg.

Throughout her thirty-year career Verburg has chosen what appear to be merely conventional photographic subjects: portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and what could be called domestic or intimate scenes, but her investigation of these subjects is anything but conventional.

Photographer JoAnn Verburg:

JOANN VERBURG: I love the boundaries in life, in the world, and I find myself photographing the boundaries in between.

SUSAN KISMARIC: The “in-between” state that characterizes Verburg’s work involves a balancing act with no definite goal in sight. The effect is to keep both artist and viewers perpetually approaching a thresh¬old between searching and finding.

On today’s tour, you will hear JoAnn Verburg speaking about selected works in the show.

To use the Acoustiguide, look for objects identified by a number. Just enter that number on your keypad and press Play.

For more detailed instructions, press 1-0-1 and the ‘play’ button at any time.

I hope you enjoy the exhibition.
