JEROME RANFT: My name is Jerome Ranft, and I'm a character sculptor. When we start designing characters, instead of just figuring it all out on paper, we get to figure it out in 3-D. So when I'm sculpting a character, I have input into how the design is going.

NARRATOR:
Pixar artists think with their art. This crablike creature is a maquette for the factory boss, Waternoose, from Monsters, Incorporated. His many eyes came from early ideas for the big blue monster Sulley.

This piece is cast in urethane from Jerome’s original, which was done in oil-based clay that doesn’t dry out.

JEROME RANFT: It's really the best thing for going through changes as we develop characters.

NARRATOR:
This sculpt is more detailed than most. Don’t miss how Waternoose’s pointed feet match his pointed fingers and his pointed cane, even his buttons end in points.

JEROME RANFT: Because the drawing was so inspiring, I took the extra time to finish him a little better.
