Autumn Ball is a true feat: a pitch-black comedy about loneliness and sexual despair in Estonia that still manages to be laugh-out-loud funny. Alienation runs rampant, if not exactly wild, in a hideous Tallinn apartment complex, a gray concrete relic of Soviet urban planning. Veiko Ounpuu's (Estonian, b. 1972) second feature heralds a notable talent; his vision is as astringent as it is deadpan, as ribald as it is disaffected—and also colored by the slightest tinge of hope. Please note: This screening is intended for adults only.
