Tehilim (Psalms), the fifth feature by Raphaël Nadjari (b. Marseilles, 1971), was photographed entirely in Jerusalem (as was his previous film, Avanim, which premiered in New York as part of MoMA's 2004 reopening celebrations). The film opens with a typical day for an orthodox Jewish couple and their two sons. But a strange occurrence during the boys' drive to school deepens into an enigma that tests the family's bond and tries its spirit; God is questioned, prayers are recited, and faith is shaken. All the while Jerusalem itself remains a presence—at once bright, tense, and secretive.
