Story of a Cheat
1936. France. Written and directed by Sacha Guitry. With Guitry, Marguerite Moreno, Jacqueline Delubac, Roger Duchesne. Guitry’s wry satire about the romance of being wicked is original and brilliantly funny. Made without dialogue but with an enthusiastic voice-over, a dry first-person "confessional" by a scoundrel, Guitry’s masterwork paved the way for many other narrated films, including Orson Welles's Citizen Kane (1941) and Robert Hamer’s Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949). 35mm print courtesy Criterion Collection. In French; English subtitles. 86 min.
