The Dawn Patrol
1930. USA. Directed by Howard Hawks. Based on The Flight Commander, by John Monk Saunders. With Richard Barthelmess, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Neil Hamilton. Hawks’s first sound film is a taut WWI aviation thriller that established his career-long fascination with group dynamics and shared responsibility. The great Barthelmess plays the role taken on by Errol Flynn in Edmund Goulding’s 1938 remake. This print is much longer than the version available on television. 108 min.
