1985. USA. Directed by Frederick Wiseman. With its Runyonesque gallery of stable hands, trainers, jockeys, socialites, and stoopers, Wiseman’s “Day at the Races” is a comical yet poignant portrait of race and class in America. From the birth, mating, and training of thoroughbred horses to the running of the 1981 Belmont Stakes, the filmmaker depicts Belmont Race Track as a tradition, a grand entertainment, and a big business. The critic Cathleen Schine writes, “In Racetrack, the industry Wiseman reveals is a peculiar one, pervaded by both a romantic respect for the magnificent animals at its center and an almost corporate atmosphere.” 114 min.
