Applause
1929. USA. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian. With Helen Morgan, Joan Peers, Fuller Mellish, Jr. Mamoulian was a transplant from the Broadway stage, and for his first film he brought with him some innovative ideas on the transition to sound. The electrifying torch singer Helen Morgan gives the greatest performance of the early sound period, but she wasn't even nominated for the Oscar (which went to Mary Pickford, at the beginning of a short-lived talkie career). 81 min.
