  • The Gleaners and I

2000. France. Written and directed by Agnès Varda. The process of gleaning—scavenging the remains of a crop that were missed by professional pickers—typically follows the first harvest. Sometimes gleaners are brought in by farmers, but usually they simply invite themselves. Most patiently look for the hidden fruit, the jewels that have ripened to succulent perfection. But a gleaner can also be the guy who Dumpster-dives to retrieve recyclable bottles, worn but still useful clothing, or perhaps a treasure or two. In French; English subtitles. 82 min.
