2008. USA. Directed by Ellen Kuras. Thavisouk Phrasavath. At age twelve, Phrasavath left the postwar chaos of Laos, surreptitiously swimming across the Mekong River to find refuge in Thailand. Eventually he was able to bring his mother and seven siblings to New York, where, thousands of miles from home, they remain bound to their former community. In this stirring documentary, Phrasavath articulates the conflict between gratitude for his American refuge and sadness at losing his home and part of his cultural heritage. In Laotian; English subtitles. 97 min.
