  • Hallelujah

1929. USA. Directed by King Vidor. With Daniel L. Haynes, Nina Mae McKinney, William E. Fountaine. In the early talkies, much creativity was stifled by the immobility of the Hollywood stages' ponderous sound equipment. Ever the innovator, Vidor helped reestablish camera fluidity by shooting many sequences silent and by filming in the deep South, staying as far away from studio interference as geographically possible. His sensitive portrait of Black plantation life belies his Texas roots and remains one of the key films of this transitional period 100 min.
