1979. USA. Directed by Frederick Wiseman. A U.S. infantry tank company stages war games to test its preparedness in coming to the aid of NATO forces during an imagined Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Wiseman created a portrait of conventional, non-nuclear ground and air war at a time when the situations in Afghanistan and Iran were deteriorating—sound familiar?—and when Cold War–era spheres of influence were being redrawn to reflect an uncertain, and perhaps even more unstable, new world order. From our present-day perspective of fighting guerilla-style wars on two fronts, Manoeuvre remains riveting and provocative. 115 min.
