The Passion of Joan of Arc
1928. France. Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. Photographed by Rudolph Maté. With Maria Falconetti, Eugene Sylvain, André Berley, Maurice Schutz, Antonin Artaud. Dreyer (1889–1968) had already made eight quality films in the decade preceding Joan of Arc, but nothing could have prepared audiences for the stunning intensity of his imagery and the emotional depth of Falconetti’s performance. Those who would argue for the unrivaled artistry of silent film prior to the “bastardization” of sound typically point to The Passion of Joan of Arc as the medium’s crowning achievement. Silent. 82 min.
