Waking Sleeping Beauty
2009. USA. Directed by Don Hahn. Screenplay by Patrick Pacheco. Using footage shot between 1984 and 1994—transformative years for the Disney animation studio—Hahn’s film documents the corporate and creative struggles that led up to the studio’s triumphant turnaround with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. The film examines the legendary conflicts between executives Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Roy Disney, and includes a voyeuristic behind-the-scenes tour shot by future Pixar cofounder John Lasseter, featuring animators Glen Keane, John Musker, and Ron Clements at the start of their careers. Burton, in the thick of his unhappy apprenticeship as a Disney artist, also makes an appearance. 86 min.
