Vincent: The Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh
1987. Australia. Written and directed by Paul Cox. Based on the letters of Vincent van Gogh. Read by John Hurt. Music by Antonio Vivaldi, Gioacchino Rossini, Norman Kaye. Vincent explores the artist’s final ten years through the eloquent letters he wrote his brother Theo. Van Gogh’s words vividly describe his early religious impulses, his longing to paint, his relentless poverty, and his personal anguish. Cox’s images record both the landscapes of Holland and France as the artist might have experienced them and, of course, the glorious paintings themselves. Print courtesy Roxie Releasing, San Francisco. 105 min.
