  • Beaches of Agnes

2008. France. Written, directed, and produced by Agnès Varda. With Varda, Mathieu Demy, Rosalie Varda. Varda, despite being almost eighty, is most likely the youngest filmmaker in spirit working today. She expands the notion of cinema autobiography with this joyously melancholic return to the beaches of her life so far: beaches in the southeast of France where as a child she and her family spent the war years and where she made her first feature film; a beach in Paris (yes, Varda finds a beach within that city); beaches in Santa Monica, CA, where she lived with her husband (filmmaker Jacques Demy) when they both made films in America; and in Noirmoutier, Normandy, where both artists bought a house, raised a family, and lived lives of gentle fullness. 115 min.
