  • A Serious Man

2009. USA. Written and directed by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen. With Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Fred Melamed, Sari Lennick. The Coen Brothers have created what many describe as their “post-Oscar” passion project. That is to say a film so liberated from convention that only artists who have reached the pinnacle of acclaim would dare to unleash it on the public. Larry Gopnik is an accursed man of biblical proportions: his wife is leaving him for the town snob, his brother is clinically unstable, and he is being blackmailed by one of his students (and those are just the problems he can start to wrap his head around). A brilliant ensemble cast, headed up by a revelatory Stuhlberg as Gopnik, immerses us in a world both familiar and fantastic. 104 min.
