October Country
2009. USA. Directed by Michael Palmieri, Donal Mosher. After chronicling the lives of his troubled working-class family through photography and nonfiction writings, Donal Mosher teamed with filmmaker Michael Palmieri to go a step further and co-direct a feature-length documentary on a year in the life of the family in October Country. Winner of the Grand Jury prize at this year’s Silverdocs, Palmieri and Mosher’s visually moving portrait covers issues of poverty, teen pregnancy, abuse, and war without being judgmental of their subject’s motives or failed dreams at a better life. Instead, the duo uses themes of ghosts and disturbing memories to portray a haunting netherworld in which the family is trapped. 80 min.
