Diary of a Chambermaid
1946. USA. Directed by Jean Renoir. Screenplay by Burgess Meredith, based on the novel by Octave Mirbeau. With Paulette Goddard, Burgess Meredith. In the second of his American films with a French setting, the expatriate Renoir relied heavily on the paintings of his father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, to achieve some of the lyricism of his A Day in the Country (1936). The younger Renoir also returns to satirizing the French bourgeoisie, as he did in his masterful The Rules of the Game (1939). 87 min.
