This is the film that, more than any other, changed the course of cinema history. Deeply moved by the Civil War mythology he had absorbed as a child in rural Kentucky, Griffith consolidated all that he—and others—had previously achieved into an epic unprecedented in scope and emotional intensity. Since the mythology he accepted was deeply racist, the film had and still has a profoundly disturbing effect on American political and social history. Silent. Approx. 130 min.
