2007. Mexico/France/Spain. Directed by Aarón Fernández. With Eduardo Granados, Alan Chávez, Carlos Ceja. Fernández’s debut feature is a gritty, realistic depiction of a Mexican boy’s attempts to escape to the U.S. with his uncle. The pair resort to stealing used cars in order to pay a “coyote” to smuggle them across the border, but theirs is a world in which no one can be trusted. The enduring friendship between the boy and his best friend is beautifully captured by the pair of young actors. In Spanish; English subtitles. 95 min.
