Old Joy
2006. USA. Directed by Kelly Reichardt. Mark is about to become a father for the first time, and he’s looking for an excuse to escape from home for a few days. His old buddy Kurt, an aging hippie, invites Mark to go on a hike in the woods near Mount Hood. Mark and Kurt are at odds with respect to responsibility and nonconformity, but each is curious about the other’s realm. When they become lost and must spend the night in the woods—a setting at once pastoral and menacing—their true selves are revealed. 76 min.
