Die Entdeckung der Currywurst (The Invention of Currywurst)

2008. Germany. Directed by Ulla Wagner. Screenplay by Wagner, based on the novel by Uwe Timm. With Barbara Sukowa, Alexander Khoun, Wolfgang Boeck. Curry sausage is a German national dish, as popular on the streets as pizza and hot dogs are in America. But it wasn't always this way. Sukowa plays irrepressible Hamburg housewife Lena Bruecker who, in the waning days of World War II, takes in a young deserter—and accidentally adapts an old dish to a new era. In German; English subtitles. 104 min.
