  • The Rules of the Game

1939. France. Directed by Jean Renoir. Screenplay by Renoir and Carl Koch, based on Les Caprices de Marianne by Alfred de Musset. With Marcel Dalio, Nora Gregor, Roland Toutain, Jean Renoir. As ineffable as it is influential, The Rules of the Game transcends genre. Scorned by the French on the eve of World War II, Renoir's masterpiece was eventually named one of the three greatest films of all time in a 1962 international critics' poll. This print was acquired for the collection in the name of Andrew Sarris, who has championed the film and its director for half a century. Sarris, best known for his book The American Cinema, is widely considered the most influential film critic in the English-speaking world. 105 min.
