  • Slumdog Millionaire

2008. Great Britain. Directed by Danny Boyle, Loveleen Tandan. With Dev Patel, Anil Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla. Danny Boyle, who first came to international prominence with the cult hit Trainspotting (1996), regains his maverick status with this visually dazzling tale, his most adventurous and emotionally satisfying work to date. Shot amidst the teaming, chaotic life of Mumbai, Slumdog Millionaire is a clever, seductive take on the classic fairy tale about an orphan with a good heart clawing his way out of a Dickensian netherworld. Accused of cheating on India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Jamal, a young orphan from the slums, is forced to recount his harsh upbringing and horrifying obstacles in a succession of flashbacks. Crosscutting between the false glitter of reality television and the harsh poverty, sweat, and grit of the streets, Boyle and maverick cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle capture the hallucinatory disjunctions of globalization. In English, Hindi; English subtitles. 116 min.
