    2008. USA. Directed by Christopher Nolan. Screenplay by Christopher Nolan, Jonathon Nolan. With Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The second installment in Nolan's re-envisioning of the Batman saga is a bombastic epic, grand in scale and vision. Bale's brooding anti-hero is paired with the late Ledger's already legendary incarnation of the morally unhinged Joker. Citizens of Gotham (and the audience members who flocked to this intense film throughout the summer) are faced with the conundrum of unmasking their own complicity with the violence and corruption that has overrun their lives. 152 min.
