  • Happy-Go-Lucky

2008. Great Britain. Written and directed by Mike Leigh. With Sally Hawkins, Eddie Marsan, Alexis Zegerman. Renowned for such biting social critiques as Life Is Sweet (1991), Naked (1993) and Secrets and Lies (1996), Mike Leigh returns with one of his most surprising films yet: one that asks whether it's possible, or even desirable, to feel unbridled, unquestioning joy in a world full of mistrust, cruelty, and "ordinary" unhappiness. Leading the film's brilliant ensemble cast are Sally Hawkins as Poppy, the irrepressible North London schoolteacher who refuses to collapse under life's daily grind, and Eddie Marsan as her uptight, misanthropic driving instructor.
