  • Encounters at the End of the World

2007. USA. Directed by Werner Herzog. Herzog's latest documentary focuses on the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, home to both scientists and blue-collar workers during the austral spring and summer. This oft-humorous film, consisting mostly of the director's ruminations on the ethereal majesties of nature, exposes us to something few people can encounter firsthand. The cinematography alone warrants a second look on a giant screen, but it is Herzog's desire to discover the farthest ends of the earth and the deepest motivations of man—and his lack of patience for the mundane—that makes Encounters at the End of the World more than just another nature documentary with pretty images. 99 min.
