    1929. USA. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian. From the novel by Beth Brown. With Helen Morgan, Joan Peers. A fading burlesque star hopes for better things for her daughter, but life gets in the way. Rouben Mamoulian energizes a familiar backstage melodrama through his innovative use of the nascent sound-recording technology at Paramount's Astoria studio. 80 min.
