    1929. USA. Directed by Jean De Limur, Monta Bell. Based on the play by W. Somerset Maugham. With Jeanne Eagels, Reginald Owen, Herbert Marshall. The Bette Davis-William Wyler remake of 1940 may be better cinema, but Jeanne Eagels's Oscar-nominated performance in this version—the first talking feature made in New York—remains electrifying.
