  • Richard III

1955. Great Britain. Directed by Laurence Olivier. Screenplay by Olivier, Alan Dent, based on the play by William Shakespeare. With Olivier. As Dalí's capital as a creative force in Hollywood filmmaking declined in the 1950s, he returned to painting, creating portraits of powerful Hollywood insiders like studio chief Jack Warner and the legendary Laurence Olivier. Dalí's stunning 1955 portrait of Olivier shows him both in profile and straight on—capturing the duality of Richard III's personality as a murderous royal and a man struggling with insecurity. This 159-minute version represents the Criterion Collection full-length restoration, and a digital betacam video will be screened. 159 min.
