1991. Canada/Great Britain/Japan. Directed by David Cronenberg. Music by Howard Shore, with solos by Ornette Coleman. With Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands. Capturing the narcotics-induced, paranoid fantasies of writer William S. Burroughs, Howard Shore's brilliant score features saxophone improvisations by Ornette Coleman and Moroccan jajouka—an ancient trance music that Beat-era writers and artists were known to have explored. "[Coleman is a] very radical jazz musician," Cronenberg observes, "legitimately the musical equivalent of Burroughs, who was also considered quite radical, quite out there, and yet with his own fantastic sense of rhythm and composition." 115 min.
