  • The Cooler

2003. USA. Directed by Wayne Kramer. Screenplay by Frank Hannah, Kramer. Music by Mark Isham. With William H. Macy, Maria Bello, Alec Baldwin. Born loser Bernie Lootz works the seedy Shangri-La casino as a "cooler," reversing the fortunes of lucky blackjack and craps players simply by brushing past them. His own fortunes seem to brighten when he falls for a cocktail waitress who reciprocates his affections, but the casino's owner (a brilliantly nuanced Baldwin), who upholds older, nobler traditions of sleaze and thuggery, quickly puts an end to all that. Isham's self-assured score typifies the cool and insouciant jazz of recent Hollywood movies, including John Williams's music for Catch Me If You Can and David Holmes's for Ocean's Eleven. 102 min.
