Under the Sand
2000. France. Directed by François Ozon. Screenplay by Ozon, Emmanuèle Bernheim. With Charlotte Rampling, Bruno Cremer. A husband, on a seaside summer vacation with his wife, goes swimming. He does not return. The filmmaker wrote, "It started with an idea to do a trilogy about mourning. It began with Under the Sand, a tearless melodrama about coping with the death of a loved one." Rampling is extraordinary as the strong-willed wife who refuses to acknowledge reality. In French; English subtitles. 95 min.
