  • The Gauntlet

1977. USA. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Screenplay by Michael Butler, Denis Shryack. Music by Jerry Fielding. With Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle. A storm of gunfire rains down on a boozy, woebegone cop (Eastwood) and the flinty Las Vegas hooker in his custody (Locke) as they make their way toward Phoenix for her key testimony in a police corruption trial. Marked by what Vincent Canby in The New York Times called "a kind of violent grace," The Gauntlet offers a thrilling double bill with Bullitt. For one of the sultriest jazz scores in an Eastwood film, longtime collaborator Fielding uses solos by trumpeter Jon Faddis and alto saxophonist Art Pepper to create brassy chromatic textures inspired, in part, by Miles Davis and Gil Evans's Sketches of Spain. 109 min.
