  • Anatomy of a Murder

1959. USA. Directed by Otto Preminger. Screenplay by Wendell Mayes. Music by Duke Ellington. With James Stewart, Lee Remick, George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara. One of the most immensely entertaining and intelligent courtroom dramas ever made also features "one of Ellington's grandest accomplishments" (Stanley Crouch). A masterful interweaving of blues, barrelhouse, and swing, of New Orleans polyphony, classical symphony, and even Irish ballads, Ellington's score moves insouciantly from the guttural to the tender—from Johnny Hodges's sultry alto sax on "Flirtibird," which announces Remick's hip-swinging femme fatale, to Paul Gonsalves's ravishing tenor on "Hero to Zero" and Ray Nance's delicate violin solo on "Low Key Lightly." 160 min.
