Perhaps the most perfect use of jazz improvisation in cinema history, Miles Davis's nocturne for Jeanne Moreau's tremulous walk through the rainy, lamplit streets of Paris is an iconic modernist expression of loneliness and longing. Like Davis, whose plaintive, sensuous score marked a critical transition from hard bop toward modality, Moreau uses silence and space to build exquisite tensions, then pierces them in startling, violent ways; where there was emptiness, now there is profound joy, despair, impetuousness, rapture....
