  • Le Ring

2007. Canada. Directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette. Screenplay by Renée Beaulieu. With Maxime Desjardins-Tremblay, Maxime Dumontier, Julianne Côté. This first feature by a recent graduate of Quebec's film academy, made on the mean streets of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in Montreal, shows how treacherous life can be for a spirited eleven-year-old in the province's toughest neighborhoods. In a community where crime is a constant, Jessy must navigate between childhood and hardened experience. His only emotional release comes from sneaking into an amateur Friday night wrestling match, where he can cheer and jeer along with the rest of the community. The young actor who plays Jessy as a child is astonishing—at once vulnerable and invincible. In French; English subtitles. 87 min.
