  • Days of Darkness

2007. Canada. Written and directed by Denys Arcand. With Marc Labreche, Diane Kruger, Sylvie Leonard, Emma de Caunes. Arcand completes his Quebec Trilogy, which began with The Decline of the American Empire (1983) and the Oscar-winning The Barbarian Invasions (2003), with a sly, wicked, and (as the title suggests) dark satire of contemporary life. The protagonist, a Walter Mitty–like civil servant in a dystopian city where political correctness reigns, spends his days hearing complaints that are as horrendous as they are hilarious. He copes with his dissolving family life and spiritually brutal job by imagining luxurious harems and heroic deeds. But retreating into oneself may be a dangerous option. In French; English subtitles. 104 min.
