  • Beau Travail

1999. France. Directed by Claire Denis. Screenplay by Denis, Jean-Pol Fargeau. With Denis Lavant, Grégoire Colin. Beau Travail is a voluptuous, elliptical adaptation of Herman Melville's novella Billy Budd set in an interracial French Foreign Legion outpost in the impoverished Horn of Africa. Seen through the eyes of a vengeful but all-too-human sergeant (Lavant), the film offers a meditation on the purifying and punishing rites of military culture, with ravishingly choreographed ballets of muscular masculinity. In French; English subtitles. 90 min.
