  • The Fish Fall in Love

2006. Iran. Directed by Ali Raffi. With Reza Kianian, Roya Nonahali, Golshifteh Farahani. In this old-fashioned, seductive tale of thwarted romance, a man returns to his hometown near the Caspian Sea to settle his father's estate. The woman he loved when he was young, who doesn't know why he vanished twenty years ago, now manages a popular restaurant in his old home. She assumes that he will once again crush her dreams by reclaiming the house. Food plays a major role in both the story and the visual appeal of the film (wonderfully shot by the great Iranian cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari) as the woman's daughter, finding herself in a predicament similar to her mother's years ago, schemes to keep the man in the house by feeding him the best of the restaurant's sinfully delicious dishes. Maintaining an easygoing pace throughout, the director reveals a strong sense of community among the women through their believable, charismatic performances. In Farsi; English subtitles. 96 min.
