  • Love Conquers All

2006. Malaysia. Directed by Tan Chui Mui. With Coral Ong Li Whei, Stephen Chua Jyh Shyan, Leong Jiun Jiun. Ah Peng arrives from the provinces to work at her aunt's rice stand on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Welcomed into the family like an older daughter, she develops a strong friendship with the youngest sister, Mei, who has a pen pal relationship with a boyfriend she has never met. Ah Peng herself has a boyfriend in Penang, and she calls him and her mother regularly from a pay phone. She attracts the attention of John, who starts courting her as he listens in on her phone calls. Even as he shamelessly tells her certain revealing stories, her loneliness slowly but surely draws her to the (seemingly) inevitable, fatal conclusion. This debut feature is full of hushed emotions and complicated insights into the peculiar flow and pull that love exerts in women's lives. In Cantonese, Mandarin; English subtitles. 90 min.
